The second of the two frowning face emojis, the slightly frowning face is now far more widespread in use than the original. This emoji has either circular or oval shaped eyes, and a downturned, sad mouth. Both Facebook and Samsung have also included eyebrows in their versions of the emoji. It’s used to show sadness, regret or remorsefulness, or after a statement which is particularly sad or moving. It will often be used to show compassion or solidarity with someone else’s grief or upset, such as after a death, illness or life changing event. Although the name would suggest it’s not “fully” sad, the “slightly” frowning face is now the most recognizable way of showing sadness.
